Start the Fires!

Want to know what books conservatives think are bad for you? Here's a list of the ten most harmful books of the 19th and 20th Centuries, with some runners-up. Not surprised: Hitler, Marx, Mao. Surprises: Darwin, Nietzsche, Kinsey, Friedan, Nader, de Beauvoir, Foulcault, Skinner, Mill, and Dewey.

I'd be willing to bet that, throughout history, more people have died because of the Bible than all of these books combined.

While you bet is understandable (and the point intended was well made) you would be wrong. Because of the dramatic population growth of the 19th and 20th centuries; the total number of people is so excessively larger now that any comparison of mass killings in history pales in shear scope to the killings in the last century because of political ideology (specifically Communism and Fascism.) For example:

Russian WWII: 25.5 million
Nazi Camps: 14 million
German Combat: 7 million
Mao's 'Great Leap Forward': 20 million (estimates of total killed by Mao during his lifetime exceed 70 million)

In comparison world population at around 1400 A.D. (the height of the Churches religious presecution of non Christians) was 300 million.

However, the Bible easily deserves its place in the top ten list of "most harmful books." Probably between "Quotations from Chairman Mao" and "The Kinsey Report."

Yeah, Simone De Beauvoir, Margaret Mead, and Ralph Nader are really up there with Mao and Hitler. And Rachel Carson -- boy, there's a left-wing revolutionary if there ever was one.
