Writer Resource

I located an excellent resource for formatting a short story when submitting to a magazine or journal.

I've been formatting my stories that way for years, and I still haven't been published anywhere.

Yeah, I know: I must suck.

On the other hand, I have gotten the odd email from a quarterly telling me why they didn't choose me, and it's never because of the formatting.

And it's never because I suck.

So, obviously, I'm left to think I must just suck.

But what makes me keep trying is that every once-in-a-while, you get the odd email telling you why you didn't make the cut. So, you know that at least sometimes they're actually reading your story and not looking for the stories from people they know.

Yeah: it's not what you write, it's who you know that knows you write.

If you want to find out if I suck, go here and browse.

The best I've gotten was online publication (I don't really count my college's literary journal, since I was the editor), but maybe I'll be luckier with the story I just shot off the other day.

Although I did get a handwritten "why I didn't get accepted" from the editor of Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Best rejection I've ever received.

On the other hand, Asmimov's was the worst rejection.
